Description
Artwork by Oregon photographer, Jason McPheeters - A glimpse behind the historic Tower Theater downtown Bend, Oregon. The tower theater is where I used to see movies as a kid. It was built in 1940. Back in the day, this two level theater had the capacity to seat 998 people. It closed its doors in 1993 due to the competition of the new multiplex movie theaters. The theater was bought by the city and reopened, but then had to close again in 1996 due to needed renovations. In 2001, a non-profit organization called the Tower Theater Foundation purchased the theater with money they had raised, and had begun construction in 2002 expanding the interior space, enlarging the basement for an orchestra pit, new lobby area, and new box seating. Today, the theater hosts an array of shows ranging from live acts and presentations, to movie screenings and more. Bend is such a fast growing and ever changing place. I grew up in this town, and am happy to see that some of the places from my childhood are still here.
